# WSSE authentication

WSSE (Web Services Security) authentication proves the caller's identity with a username and password. Bruno builds the required WSSE token from those credentials and attaches it to the request, so you do not have to construct the header by hand.

Use WSSE when an API documents UsernameToken / WSSE as its auth scheme (common on some SOAP and enterprise HTTP APIs).

## Configure WSSE auth

1. Open a request and go to the **Auth** tab.
2. Select **WSSE Auth** from the Auth Type dropdown.
3. Enter the **Username**.
4. Enter the **Password**. For extra security, store it in a [secret variable](https://docs.usebruno.com/secrets-management/secret-variables.md) and reference it (for example, `{{password}}`).
5. Send the request. Bruno generates the WSSE credentials and adds them to the request for you.

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Username** | WSSE username |
| **Password** | WSSE password |

> [!TIP]
>
> **Avoid repeating the same key on every request.** Configure API Key auth once on the **folder** or **collection** Auth tab. Bruno applies those credentials automatically to every request under that folder or collection set to **Inherit**. See [Inherit auth](https://docs.usebruno.com/auth/overview.md#inherit-auth).
