# API Key authentication

API Key authentication sends a key-value pair with your request so the server can identify the caller. The key name is often something like `X-API-KEY` or `apikey`, and the value is the secret issued by the API provider.

Bruno can place the pair in a **request header** or as a **query parameter**, depending on what the API expects.

## Configure API Key auth

1. Open a request and go to the **Auth** tab.
2. Select **API Key** from the Auth Type dropdown.
3. Enter the **Key** (the header or query parameter name).
4. Enter the **Value** (your API key). For extra security, store it in a [secret variable](https://docs.usebruno.com/secrets-management/secret-variables.md) and reference it (for example, `{{apiKey}}`).
5. Under **Add To**, choose **Header** or **Query Param**.
6. Send the request. Bruno attaches the key-value pair in the place you selected.

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Key** | Name of the header or query parameter (for example `X-API-KEY`) |
| **Value** | The API key string |
| **Add To** | Where Bruno sends the pair: **Header** or **Query Param** |

> [!TIP]
>
> **Avoid repeating the same key on every request.** Configure API Key auth once on the **folder** or **collection** Auth tab. Bruno applies those credentials automatically to every request under that folder or collection set to **Inherit**. See [Inherit auth](https://docs.usebruno.com/auth/overview.md#inherit-auth).
